When I was younger my
hair was straight…or perhaps very mildly wavy and sometime around high school
it started to curl. I totally didn’t notice it; and thought I just had frizzy unmanageable
hair and I always wore it in a ponytail.
Then one day one of my mother’s friends (who happened to be a
hairdresser) said “you have curly hair.” And I still didn’t believe her. I
actually have no idea when it really hit me that I had curly hair but once I
was convinced I immediately started looking up how to care for curly hair.
I thought I was stuck with ugly hair for life but no I had
secretly been blessed with curly hair.
Basically in my search for how to care for curly hair I found
some basic rules that will help curly hair.
1. BE GENTLE WHEN HANDLING CURLY HAIR
2. No shampoo. Wash your hair, yes. Use
conditioner, yes.
Shampoo has some tough cleansers that dry
out your hair and your hair does not appreciate that. Stay away from CHLORIDES
and SULFATES. Even some conditioners have chlorides in them so always check the
ingredients before you use them.
When checking the ingredients make sure all
the good stuff is listed first because the list goes from most to least amount
in the mix. Try to get as many natural
ingredients as you can find.
3. Don’t Comb Your Hair When It’s Dry
This will undo your curls and make your
hair fluffy. Wet your hair before you comb it.
4.
Use a
Wide Tooth Comb
A wide toothed comb will help the wet hair
gather into its natural curls. Be gentle with combing wet hair because hair
strands stretch when they are wet and can tear.
5.
Pat Dry
Your Hair with a Towel
Pat dry your hair the way you would pat dry
your face. You can also lightly wrap it up in a towel turban. Rubbing your hair
with the towel can cause breakage. I used to have so many split ends until I
stopped rubbing my hair with the towel.
6. Try to Stay Away from Heat
Let your hair dry naturally or if you really
have to use a blow dryer at least use a diffuser. Straightening your hair is
also very damaging, forget it, love your curls, give them a chance.
